- 5 Scents That Will Improve Your Productivity
What's the defining scent of most offices? A mix of stale coffee, a hint of copier toner, and a faint whiff of despair? What you breathe can affect your mood. So why do we pay less attention to the smells in our workplaces?
In Japan, it's not uncommon for workplaces to be scented. Depending on the time of day, a scent is released that either stimulates or relaxes employees. A scientific study conducted by the Japanese fragrance company Takasago confirmed that errors were reduced by more than 50% when lemon aroma was diffused into the air.
Restaurants, banks, stores, and even airports are all benefiting from scent marketing. Why not extend its benefits to the office? Which scents will improve your performance and which will make you more alert? Here are some key scents that will boost your productivity at work.
Rosemary
Rosemary is believed to improve memory. It stimulates the mind and clarifies thoughts.
Jasmine
Jasmine is wonderfully relaxing. It also relieves tension and
soothes the nerves .
Citrus fruits
All citrus scents offer benefits. Grapefruit combats mental fatigue. Lemon is invigorating. Orange reduces stress. And bergamot oil is even used to treat depression.
Lavender
Lavender has a very calming aroma. It relaxes and
reduces stress and anxiety.
Mint
Mint scents are energizing and refreshing. Peppermint strengthens and invigorates. It stimulates the brain and improves concentration.
Practical side
Fragrances can be applied in many ways. It all depends on your budget (and your boss's generosity).
Some people prefer using
modern diffusers placed in air vents. Others prefer to go the route of scented oils. For others, inhaling the aroma from a soaked tissue is enough. This is a good method for moments when you feel tired.
Scented candles and
traditional incense are inexpensive aromatherapy techniques. However, using them in the office is highly risky. Therefore, good alternatives to candles include battery-powered aroma diffusers, aroma plug-ins, or even those that connect to a computer via USB. A few drops of fragrance oil in a bowl of water placed near a heat source will also improve air quality.
