- For Better Cleaning. New Fragrances from Polish Scientists
Essential oils, the main components of turpentine, and waste products from the wood industry. Scientists from Wrocław University of Science and Technology will use these and other natural ingredients to create entirely new fragrance compounds. They will serve as the fragrant building blocks of household chemicals, and even cosmetics and perfumes.
How many times have you cleaned your apartment, only to have to air it out again because of the stuffy, unpleasant odors
of cleaning products ? This could change in just three years. Polish scientists are developing compositions that will give household chemicals a much more pleasant scent.
How are natural raw materials treated to obtain fragrance compositions?
This requires several steps. The ingredients are transformed chemically and enzymatically. Even 1 gram of the substance is suitable for this task. The next step involves understanding the structure and properties of the components. They are separated into separate compounds. They are smelled and then the most attractive ones are selected.
What steps will precede the approval of a fragrance compound for production?
The Poles will test the new compounds for toxicity and potential threats to the environment and humans. They will verify that the resulting compounds are not carcinogenic. They will analyze how the resulting mixtures affect the ecosystem. They will use algae, daphnia, and bacteria for this purpose. They will also test the compounds' stability under various conditions, so that they can then be used in the chemical, cosmetics, and perfume industries.
