- Curious about the scent of space? Smell the space candle.
Are you passionate about space? If so, you can now enjoy the scent of space in your own home, without leaving Earth. This scented candle, created by an online toy company, makes it possible.
The founders of ThinkGeek – a company specializing in the production of fun and unusual gadgets – came up with the idea of developing a fragrance reminiscent of space. The fragrance was packaged in a candle.
The prospect of creating such a scent excited the creators of the idea. After all, has anyone ever considered what
space actually smells like? The team behind the candles contacted NASA and tried to determine what space actually smells like.
Astronauts returning to Earth described the scent as otherworldly, irritating, and pungent. Some compared it to
the scent of gunpowder and ozone , which is quite prevalent in space. However, a burning scent wouldn't sell well in a world dominated by floral aromas. So ThinkGeek's creators opted for lavender (though they weren't entirely convinced NASA would approve such a scent).
The first versions
of scented candles were very smoky, with a pungent ozone tinge. They smelled strongly of gunpowder. Perfecting the candles took some time, but the result is sure to please any space enthusiast.
The cosmic scent is available in a set of four themed scented candles. The others include a tribute to Nirvana called "Teen Spirit," a cinnamon-scented "Retro Arcade," and a fresh, green candle that pays homage to "The Lord of the Rings," called "Middle Earth."
