Can scents wake us up from deep sleep?
Can smoke or the first faint scent of fire awaken a person from a deep sleep? The answer to this "burning" question is quite complicated. They may, but they don't have to. According to studies published over the last 20 years, the smell of smoke may or may not wake you up. Does the smell of smoke wake you up from sleep? In 1997, a medical laboratory in Alabama conducted an experiment with 10 adult volunteers. While they were sleeping, they diffused the scent of water, citrus, and smoke into a room. The experiment tested whether the smoky scent would awaken the sleeping participants. Although the participants responded to the stimuli, only two of them awoke. The year 2004 brought another experiment, this time at Brown University. Six people were recruited – three healthy women and three healthy men, aged between 20 and 25. All were awakened by a noise. The smell did not. The room where the participants slept was sprayed with the scent of peppermint and pyridine – a chemical compound with a distinct, fishy odor. The participants did not react to either aroma. As the saying goes, we wake up and smell the coffee . Not the other way around. Does sleep phase matter? Sleep scientists confirm that sensory stimuli such as sound, temperature, touch, and even pain are less effective at waking people who are in a deep sleep stage. It's easier to awaken someone during a lighter sleep stage than someone who has fallen into, say, REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Things that disturb sleep, such as the irritating snoring of a household member, can trigger peripheral receptors—tiny sensors located in the skin. The louder the sounds and the stronger the vibrations, the quicker someone will wake up. However, the sense of smell differs in this matter, and the intensity of odors doesn't play a role in waking from deep sleep . What about individual predispositions? Some of us are more sensitive to olfactory stimuli than others. Such individuals are likely to be awakened by a strong smell. Whether it's the aroma of a cake baking late at night or a faint fire in the fireplace.
