What does rain smell like?

Petrichor – what does rain smell like?

Actinomycetes, which inhabit the soil, are bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen. They secrete a compound into the ground that is responsible for the smell of damp soil. It's called geosmin (from the Greek γεω – earth and ὀσμή – smell). The human nose is highly sensitive to this odor. Studies have shown that humans can detect this aroma at concentrations as low as 5 parts per trillion. Therefore, we can easily detect it not only after rain but also when eating carp or beets. The second factor that influences petrichor is oils. During droughts, plants produce oils that inhibit growth and allow for water conservation. These oils accumulate in the soil. In the soil, they combine with geosmin, resulting in the characteristic smell we detect after rain—our petrichor. Scientists coined this name in 1964.
