How scent works

How scent works
Why is it scent, rather than sound or image, that is more permanently etched in memory? What role does the subconscious play in this? What does the sense of smell influence? What do we owe to fresh and pleasant aromas? Finally, how do scents affect our emotions? The predominance of olfactory stimuli over visual and auditory ones Olfactory signals reach the brain faster than visual or auditory stimuli. They bypass consciousness more quickly because they are direct. This also means that the body's response to aromas is faster. Smell is the most important sense . Its loss or impairment limits our perception of the world. Just consider an example from the faunal world – an animal deprived of its sense of smell has a lower chance of survival than one with impaired vision. Smell and scents are the beginning of the path to our emotions Smell is the most primal of the senses. Thanks to it, scent has a significant impact on memory and human emotional states. This is because, on its path through the body, it touches the limbic system. This is the center where our feelings and emotions, likes and dislikes, arise. Smell and the generation of specific reactions and emotions Scent can occur in a general pattern: scent -> emotion -> reaction/effect. Using the right scent can influence the recipient's feelings and emotions , which in turn will push them towards the intended response. Scent can evoke desired emotional states in the client, such as calm, relaxation, satisfaction, or a sense of comfort. Scents also help evoke the following responses:
  1. scent ⇒ positive emotions and associations ⇒ purchase,
  2. smell ⇒ positive mood and attitude ⇒ longer stay in a specific place,
  3. smell ⇒ feeling of hunger or thirst ⇒ purchase and longer stay, e.g. in a restaurant or cafe.
What scent should you use to create a friendly and inviting atmosphere? Real estate agents use the scent of vanilla to help sell their homes. By diffusing the aroma of vanilla in homes for sale, they create a fresh and cozy atmosphere. Leather and mahogany wood scents are diffused in car showrooms to associate them with luxury and superior quality. Furthermore, these aromas enhance the prestige of lower-end car models. The aromas of coffee and citrus are diffused throughout gas stations. They stimulate appetite and thirst among shoppers, and as a result, station turnover increases.
