The European Space Agency reveals: Comets have a strong, distinct odor. They smell of rotten eggs, horse urine, and sharp, choking formaldehyde.
Hydrogen sulphide and ammonia are responsible for these peculiar odors.
Where did the idea to study the smell of comets come from?
The Rosetta mission aimed to understand how comets formed and what impact they had on the origins of the Solar System. Among other things, the probe analyzed the dust and gas cloud chemically and mineralogically and studied the nucleus of comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko (object 67 P). Additionally, it "sniffed" its fumes using specialized instruments. What information did these fumes provide?
Comet-style perfume
The faint, bitter, slightly almond aroma of hydrogen cyanide is mixed with a few notes of alcohol (methanol), the acetic aroma of sulfur dioxide and a hint of the sweet smell of carbon disulfide.
The collected material is a good start to study the origin of solar system material, the formation of the earth and the origins of life.
What does the rest of space smell like?
