The sense of smell is incredibly precise. Accurate. Extraordinarily retentive. And exceptionally sensitive – it exhibits a sensitivity to chemical particles 10,000 times greater than the sense of taste. It would be difficult to identify a sensory device as precise and meticulous.
Numerous scientific studies are demoting sight and hearing and giving it a place of prominence to the sense of smell. It deserves its place. The role of smell in human life is immense. Suffice it to say that it warns us of danger, influences better taste, supports purchasing decisions, transports us to long-forgotten moments, and, ultimately, provides aesthetic experiences.
How to perceive smells
The five senses rule us. Everyone knows this. But which of them are chemical senses? What does that even mean? The essence of taste and smell is the detection of chemical compounds and their mixtures from the environment. So how do we perceive smells? This is achieved thanks to olfactory receptors located in the nasal passages. The receptors process information and then send it to the brain, which encodes it.

Smells influence human behavior, thinking, and emotions. They provoke specific reactions, for example, encouraging the purchase of a product or encouraging a longer lingering at a restaurant. Why is this so? The influence of scents on people is undeniable, as the olfactory system is directly linked to the limbic system. This triggers rapid changes in a person's emotional state.

Female or male? You can't go wrong here. Research also confirms this. The female nose prevails. Women's ability to recognize scents is more precise than men's. Women cope better with the universe of scents. This includes those considered typically masculine, such as the aromas of coffee, alcohol, or gasoline, and typically feminine, including the scents of food, cleaning products, and perfumes. Women also have an advantage over men when it comes to:
- distinguish the scent of people of the same sex,
- identify gender,
- smell your own body odor.
In one study, 60% of women were able to recognize their own scent, while only 5% of men successfully performed the same task.
Body odor and emotional state
Have you ever considered that scent can tell you whether someone is happy,
stressed , or afraid? Smells have this ability too. The human body releases various aromas, and these, in turn, suggest our emotional state. We smell differently when we're filled with joy than when we're afraid.
