- Smell is an impulse to work and study
Can scents motivate students to learn? Do scents make employees more willing to perform their duties? How can scents enhance monotonous and tedious tasks?
Smells not only influence our mood, but also, depending on their intensity:
- motivate to action and consistency,
- affect the time and quality of performing scientific tasks and official activities,
- make learning and working more attractive.
Relationships between scents and consumer behavior
A study conducted by Polish psychologists confirms what has long been the subject of interest among scientists worldwide. The relationship between specific aromas and consumer behavior has been analyzed on many levels. However, spraying fragrance in the immediate environment has other consequences beyond increased sales.
Psychological and cognitive possibilities of scents
Scientists from the Wrocław department of SWPS (Social Psychology and Humanities) examined the impact of scents of varying intensity on participants'
mood , the time and quality of a task, and their determination during performance. They conducted the experiment on 80 high school students.
The experiment took place in three rooms, and the students were randomly divided into three groups. One group was located in a well-ventilated computer room. The other two groups were filled with one of the following aromas (pleasant and cognitive-enhancing):
-
jasmine scent – relaxing and improving memory,
- orange scent – stimulating and encouraging to action.
One class smelled delicately, the other intensely.
All groups tackled a perseverance task. They then answered a series of questions that included:
- their current mood,
- the attractiveness of the task they performed,
- intention to participate in twin tests.
A subtle scent that drives action
As it turned out,
subdued scents produced better results . Those exposed to
the subtle scent were the most cheerful. They completed the task the longest and with the most intensity, which, in turn, was most appealing to them, as measured by the rating. Comparing the control group to the intense scent group, their moods and determination to complete the task did not differ significantly.
