- The Smell of a One Dollar Bill as a Symbol of American Capitalism
Mike Bouchet offered his own unique take on American capitalism. He crafted an ode to greed, materialism, and power, packaged in a bottle with the scent of a one-dollar bill .
American artist Mike Bouchet is known for his bold, multidisciplinary works that explore the realities of consumer culture. His latest work is a commentary on American capitalism. Bouchet created the fragrance "Tender," which encapsulates the aroma of a dollar bill.
Thanks to its fresh print and ease of use, the American one-dollar bill inspired many. It was no different for Bouchet. His "Tender" resonated throughout the open, empty gallery, creating a space for a reflective sensory experience.
Air Aroma , an international leader in scent marketing, contributed to the artist's project. Air Aroma, in collaboration with New York's Marlborough Chelsea Gallery, provided the fragrance, creating a unique and delicate atmosphere that permeated the entire space.
To develop the fragrance, perfumer Marc Vom Ende spent months analyzing, refining, and extracting chemical compounds from embossed banknotes. He combined cotton and linen, as well as 100 other volatile organic chemicals. Among them were leather, metal, salt, and sweat. All these ingredients combined to create the distinctive scent of "Tender," which was first experienced in the gallery at the turn of January and February of this year.
