The scent of lavender for fear of the dentist
Are you terrified of the dentist? Do you avoid visits until you're doubled over in pain? Your suffering may be over. It turns out that lavender essential oils can reduce dental anxiety. You may know lavender for its calming and relaxing properties. You may have used it to treat headaches. It probably helped you fall asleep. Now, lavender can help you overcome your fear of the dentist. Experts from King's College London conducted a study of 340 adults. Those exposed to the scent of lavender in the waiting room were significantly calmer than those not exposed to the scent. The experiment lasted a month. Half of the participants inhaled lavender oil from aromatherapy burners or humidifiers in a waiting room. The other half waited their turn under standard circumstances.

The scent of lavender reduces fear

The first group, compared to the control group, experienced significantly less fear of dental treatment (regardless of whether it was a checkup or drilling) or no fear at all. Lavender can indeed be used in dental waiting rooms as an effective tool for immediately alleviating anxiety. Until now, dentists have performed procedures under general anesthesia or used hypnotherapy for very anxious patients.

Irrational fear, tangible consequences

A significant portion of the population avoids dental visits because they fear them. This, in turn, can have serious consequences for dental health. A frightened patient means a nervous dentist. Working under increased pressure potentially jeopardizes results and even prolongs the visit itself. Therefore, finding ways to reduce anxiety is crucial.
